The simultaneous spinning of the sanding disk and moving it in an ellipse ensures that no single part of the abrasive material travels the same path twice. This unique sanding action does not leave swirl marks and it is also not sensitive to direction of wood grain.
This makes it work very well when sanding two pieces of wood that meet at right angles. Orbit sanders use sandpaper discs that come with dust collectors. Disks are attached using adhesives or hooks and loops. Many models come with these dust collection features.
What makes these sander so unique is it's ability to sand in a completely random orbit, at speeds of up to 25,000 RPM. This completely random motion is what allows the sander to be able to leave a smooth finish without the sanding marks that other sanders leave behind.
